Tragic Incident: Car Plows Into Crowd, Leaving 10 Dead at Guadeloupe Christmas Event


A Christmas celebration in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe, turned tragic when a vehicle rammed into a crowd who had come to celebrate the start of festive lights, claiming the lives of 10 and injuring nine others. Guadeloupe is a French territory in the Caribbean Sea.

The incident took place on Friday at Schoelcher Square, located opposite the town hall and church, where the final preparations of the event were underway, according to local broadcaster Radio Caraibes Internationale (RCI).

An investigation has been launched into the incident; however, the cause of the crash has not yet been ascertained. Witnesses said that the driver may have suffered a medical emergency, but the officials are yet to release a confirmation, according to RCI.

The driver of the vehicle, according to local media reports, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and was arrested following the crash.

Out of the wounded, three victims sustained critical injuries in the incident.

Police teams, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene, and the town’s mayor activated a crisis unit to support victims and their families, describing the incident as a “horrific tragedy”.
