Tura, Dec 8: Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU) today kicked off a four-day workshop aimed at accelerating digital transformation and strengthening AI-driven academic excellence across higher education institutions in the Northeast.
The workshop “Capacity Building for Academic Excellence in Digital Transformation: AI Integration for North Eastern Region Higher Education,” the programme is being organised by the Department of Philosophy and will run from December 8 to 11.
Bringing together academicians, administrators and digital experts, the workshop seeks to familiarise participants with the creative, intelligent and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching, research and academic administration — a skillset increasingly seen as essential for the future of education in the region.
The inaugural session opened with Earic Wanlambok Sohtun as emcee, followed by a welcome address from Dr. Temjenkala Jamir, Head (In-Charge) of the Department of Philosophy and Convener of the workshop. Dr. Jamir highlighted the rapid pace at which AI is reshaping knowledge production and academic workflows, stressing the need for universities in the Northeast to stay technologically equipped and ethically aligned.

Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills, Hema Nayak, who graced the event as Chief Guest, underscored the urgency of developing ethical awareness alongside technical skills. She noted that AI has become deeply embedded in everyday decision-making, yet many users remain unaware of the responsibilities that accompany its use. “Everyone uses AI in some form today, but not everyone understands the moral considerations involved. This workshop is designed to bridge that gap by enabling participants to engage with AI intelligently, creatively and responsibly,” she said. She added that a four-day programme, rather than a single-day event, allows for meaningful hands-on learning and real comprehension of AI tools.
The workshop brings together five resource persons from across India and Bhutan: Dr. Abhishek Kashyap, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, IIT Guwahati, Lawmna Kima, Founder & CEO, LushAITech Pvt. Ltd. and Executive Director – AI & Data Practice, EY GDS India, Dr. Tiatemsu Longkumer, Senior Lecturer, Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan and Dr. Ujjal Marjit, Head, Centre for Information Resource Management (CIRM), University of Kalyani
Each expert will lead interactive sessions covering AI applications, digital innovation, data ethics, and academic integration, offering participants both conceptual grounding and practical experience.
Dr. Jamir said the diverse expertise of the speakers would help attendees understand AI from multiple lenses — philosophical, technical, pedagogical and administrative.
Conducted offline from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM throughout the four days, the workshop promises to equip scholars and educators with the skills and ethical frameworks needed to navigate an academic landscape increasingly shaped by AI.
