Mumbai Metro Implements AI Wheel Monitoring System for Enhanced Safety and Cost Efficiency

Mumbai Metro has installed an indigenously developed AI-based Wheel Profile Measurement System (AWPMS) for the first time, enabling proactive detection of wheel wear, damage and replacement needs.

Developed by IntelliRail, the system is designed to improve safety, extend wheel life and reduce stress on tracks across Lines 2A and 7, officials said.

IntelliRail, which specialises in AI-powered diagnostic tools for railways, said the “IntelliWPMS is a fixed, trackside network of sensors and equipment systems using lasers and cameras to provide accurate data on various wheel parameters.”

It added that the system, powered by machine vision, “ensures accuracy and speed of analysis, while minimising human dependency,” while also enhancing asset life and delivering significant cost savings.

The AWPMS has been deployed at the Charkop depot as part of MMMOCL’s wider metro modernisation programme.

Officials said the latest deployment is integrated into a larger diagnostic package being supplied by BEML for the Charkop and Mandale depots, with IntelliRail’s system installed under the guidance of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

IntelliRail highlighted that India’s metro systems are transitioning from periodic maintenance to condition-based maintenance (CBM), driven by sensors, analytics and remote monitoring.

Experts noted that as metro networks move closer to unmanned train operations, technologies like AWPMS will play a key role in ensuring efficiency and safety.

Calling the installation “a significant accomplishment,” IntelliRail CEO Piyush Nigam said the project aligns with the Make in India mandate and strengthens the company’s push to take the technology global.

The company added that its no-contact, high-accuracy system requires no major civil work and uses edge computing to deliver immediate results, while also enabling SMS or email alerts when defects are detected.
