Monday Snow Day: First Alert Weather Update

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – 5:12am Monday AM Update: Overnight, we raised the snow accumulation forecast for today’s snow by around an inch, and added in tomorrow morning for a First Alert Weather Day tag.

Here’s the updated map.

The amount of moisture has increased in short range modeling, with around 0.40″ of liquid for the zone in Pink, which now includes Richmond and the Tri-Cities.

As temperatures drop into the 20s during the storm, this will be a dry and “fluffy” snow, meaning liquid to snow ratios could creep above 10:1. There could easily be some 5″ plus totals today!

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the region and have now issued a Winter Storm Warning for areas Including Henrico and the City of Richmond.

TIMING:

We expect snow to start falling mid morning (after 9am) in Richmond, with a slightly earlier start time possible West of I-95. Commute into work should be largely unaffected. Snow will likely start sticking to the ground by late morning as the steadier snow arrives.

Midday through evening: Light to moderate accumulating snow

IMPACT:

There’s enough cold air that this system (like our snow on Friday) will likely be all snow for the 12 On Your Side viewing area. It’ll be fluffy and great for sledding!

It’s rare for us to have these “pure” snow events without any rain or ice in early December but it looks like it’ll happen again, especially in Southern Virginia.

With lows tonight dipping into the teens, any snow or ice covered roads or sidewalks will stay that way overnight.

We have tomorrow morning tagged as a First Alert Weather Day for icy road conditions.
