The government today said that multidimensional poverty in India is estimated to have declined from 29.17 per cent in 2013-14 to 11.28 per cent in 2022-23. Replying to during the question hours in Lok Sabha, the Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, said around 24.8 crore people have escaped poverty during this period.
Quoting the World Bank report on International Poverty Line, the Minister said India’s extreme poverty rate decreased to 5.25 per cent in 2022-23 from 27.12 per cent in 2011-12. He said the number of people living in extreme poverty fell from 34.4 crore to 7.5 crore over this period.

He said the Government has a multi-pronged approach that addresses economic inequality, promotes social mobility, and ensures fair economic participation.
On the employment opportunities, the Minister added that the unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 and above has decreased from 5.8 per cent in 2018-19 to 3.2 per cent in 2023-24.
