Union Power Minister Manohar Lal today said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) based applications play a pivotal role in building intelligent, consumer-centric, and self‑optimizing distribution networks. The Minister said this while addressing 1st National Conference on the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies in the power distribution sector in New Delhi. Addressing the concluding session, Power Minister Manohar Lal said that AI/ML based solutions, smart meter analytics and GenAI-based decision support can transform both consumer experience and operational efficiency. The Minister urged all DISCOMs to work closely with ecosystem stakeholders to transition towards a smart, reliable, and consumer-focused distribution system. Mr Lal said that AI/ML based solutions will help households to manage their consumption better, prevent outages before they occur, and protect honest consumers from theft burdens. He added that this will enable DISCOMs to reduce losses, optimise power purchase costs and reinvest in stronger infrastructure.
The Minister awarded DISCOMs and enterprises for presenting innovative tech solutions. He also launched STELLAR (Strategic Expansion for Long Term Load Adequacy and Resilience) software to empower DISCOMs to prepare resource adequacy plans. The conference showcased cutting-edge use cases of smart meter data analytics, integrated IT/OT systems, and Smart Home Automation Solutions. It aimed to promote enhanced power distribution management, and facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices towards achieving operational efficiency, grid reliability, and sustainability goals. The solutions highlighted real-world implementations of AI/ML for demand forecasting, revenue protection, cost optimization, and digital system integration.
