Another high-major test away from Norman for Oklahoma.
After knocking off Wake Forest in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Tuesday night in Winston-Salem, the Sooners (6-2) are back in action on Saturday night for another de facto road test against Arizona State (6-2) on Saturday night in Phoenix as part of the Jerry Colangelo Classic.
For OU, the season got off to a bit of a shaky start at just 2-2 following disappointing performances in losses to Gonzaga and Nebraska. But, after handling their business in two home games against Oral Roberts and Alcorn State, Oklahoma is now seemingly turning a corner after back-to-back impressive wins over Marquette and the Demon Deacons. It’s still very early, but it seems as if the Sooners have started to find their collective groove.
On the other side is a Sun Devils team that has done some nice things early in the season of their own. Like OU, one of ASU’s two losses this season came at the hands of Gonzaga with the other being in the finals of the Maui Invitational to USC last week. Arizona State is coached by Bobby Hurley in his 11th year in Tempe.
Saturday’s game will be the first time Oklahoma has played in the state of Arizona in nearly 15 years. The last time came all the way back in 2010, when the Sooners took on Grand Canyon State in Tucson. OU and ASU have met just two times previously, with the schools splitting those two matchups.
After this tilt with a foe from the Big 12, Oklahoma will do it again next weekend in their annual Bedlam tilt against Oklahoma State at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The Sooners will return to the Lloyd Noble Center then the following Tuesday against Kansas City on December 16th.
