A Delhi couple bled to death after remaining trapped for nearly eight hours inside their mangled WagonR when an unidentified heavy vehicle rammed it from behind on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway near Nuh, police said.
The victims have been identified as Laxmi Ram (42), who was a contractual labourer and his wife Kusumlata (38). They were returning home from Hindaun, in Karauli district of Rajasthan, when the accident took place between 11.30 pm and midnight on Tuesday near Nowshera village. Their grey Maruti WagonR, registered in Delhi, was crushed against the metal crash barrier on the expressway.
Police reached the spot only around 7.30 am on Wednesday after a patrol team was informed of the wreck by a passerby. By then, husband and wife had died from injuries and blood loss while still trapped inside. The position of the bodies indicated the husband had managed to hold on to his wife, said police.
The couple lived in Mangiram Park in Delhi’s Budh Vihar with their four young children (two sons and two daughters).
In his handwritten complaint that formed the basis of the FIR, Laxmi Ram’s father, Devi Singh (65), stated: “On 02.12.2025 around 7 pm, my son Laxmi Ram and daughter-in-law Kusumlata left for Delhi in WagonR… They were going via Delhi Mumbai Highway. When my son and daughter-in-law reached Channel Point 30.900, some unknown vehicle hit them from behind at very high speed and… caused a terrible accident… both my son… and daughter-in-law… died on the spot… I called my son at 8.56 am, then the Jaisinghpur post people picked up the phone and told me that your son and daughter-in-law have met with an accident and died.”
The Nuh Sadar police station has registered an FIR for rash driving and death by negligence against the unknown driver of the heavy vehicle.
Police are examining CCTV footage to trace the offending vehicle.

“Two heavy vehicles have been flagged on the footage; we are tracing the owner of those and should nab the accused soon,” said Station House Officer, Inspector Praveen Kumar.
Police came as soon as they were alerted, he said, indicating that night drivers merely drove past.
The post-mortem was conducted at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nalhar on Wednesday, and the bodies were handed over to the family later in the evening.
The cremation was conducted Thursday morning after the husband’s family brought back the bodies from Nuh.

Speaking with The Indian Express over the phone, Devi Singh’s voice was choked with grief, ruing the lack of help from passersby at the time of the accident. “The incident happened just before midnight, the police told me after they looked at CCTV footage. The car remained there through the night and multiple vehicles must have passed it by…,” he said.
Singh, a farmer, is worried about how to provide for the education of his grandchildren now. “I am only a small farmer, I have a few buffaloes. My son and daughter-in-law had left home with some vegetables from here. Their kids were in Delhi at the time but came to the village after…”
Singh had broken the news to his son’s father in-law who had immediately broken down.
“The couple had married in 2003… I had called them through the night after they left to ensure they were back safely. After the police picked up their phone in the morning, I immediately left for Nuh,” he said.
Singh and his family belong to the Dalit community.
